Hyoushitsu
This is a good matchup. These are two excellent, possibly top tier units. It's a tough call for me.

Matthew helps too many ranks not to get my vote on HHM. Pent is a solid unit, but he can't do nearly as much to help you as Matthew can, even on the other mdoes where Matthew doesn't have the Silver Card argument.

I'm gonna have to give Matthew my vote. S-ranking is way too easy by using him. The only rank he doesn't improve by leaps and bounds is Tactics.
Janissary
Matthew easily. Pent comes too late. If he came a couple kevels earlier, this could be a fight.
Bearclaw
Matthew, the silver card is just too freaking good for S rank to deny his usefulness.
The Sacae Tribe Brigade
Matthew mostly because he steals, Picks locks, and is more helpful in those fog of war boards especally if he has a torch. You'll be able to see practicly the whole Field. Pent was great and all but not as helpful as matthew.
Swordsalmon
Matthew, for he makes HHM a bit easier earlier on.
The Green Lance
Matthew, because he picks locks, steals gems/crests, and becomes an assassin. Matthew also helps see during the fog of war because he is a theif. Matthew supports with Guy and Pent comes up far too late to match Matthew's usefulness. Sure Pent's got good skill in weapons but it is not hard getting Matthew's skill up too.
Hyoushitsu
Y'know what? In HHM, Matthew is the best unit in the game. He makes an S-rank playthrough ridiculously easy.
Janissary
I disagree. Once he hits 20, he is useless except for treasure finding. Raven is too strong for your tactics rating to deny top spot.
Hyoushitsu
Matthew S-ranks Funds by himself. He affords every other unit on your team to carry better weapons, which indirectly boosts Combat by a ton. He allows units like Farina and Dart to be used with minimal drawback. He boosts the Experience rating better than pretty much any other unit. And he's a great combat unit for the first half of the game to boot.

That > Raven.
Aitze
I voted Pent.
I'm sorry, but... I fail to see why being useful for getting high ranks is so valuable. Why would you care about ranks..?
The Green Lance
If you want to truly be a master at the game you gotta go for the S rank. smile.gif
Hyoushitsu
Good units make the game easier.
S-ranking HHM is the hardest challenge you can attempt in this particular game.
Matthew S-ranks the game almost by himself, thereby making the hardest mode of the game a piece of cake.

Matthew = best unit.

That's only on HHM though.
Janissary
Really it depends what you value in S rank runs. I value brute force, while Hyo values utility.
Hyoushitsu
Matthew allows all of your units to use brute force. So even by your definitition, Matthew is the best.
The Green Lance
If you value brute force than go with Matthew because him uping the funds gives you much better weapons for all your units not just some.
Hyoushitsu

Exactly. Guy using nothing but Killing Edges, Kent using Silver Lances all the time, Reaver weapons diminishing the value of the WT. Matthew makes it all happen.
Janissary
If you do that, you will not be S ranking funds.
Hyoushitsu
Yes you will. Matthew gets you the Silver Card, making Funds a breeze to S-rank. That Silver Card gives your team a crapload of extra cash, which allows you to buy tons of weapons for your units.
Flamemonkey
Er, uh... How exactly do you get the Silver Card? *has never gotten in FE7*
Cormag~
You have to steal it from Ch.18/19x's boss.

Um, my vote goes to Matthew... Hyo said everything. x)
Flamemonkey
Oh. Gotcha.

And I just think that Matthew is better. As a fighter. I almost always promote him because I don't care about my ranks. So yeah.
Janissary
Cromag it is in Chapter 19/20 and it is on a thief. The Dragon Gate chapter. On a Thief.
Cormag~
No, that's the member card.
The on that gives you access to the Secret Shops. x)
Bearclaw
Here is exactly why the silver card make Matthew godly. Lets say you buy an iron sword for 600 gold (or w/e). With the silver card the price drops to 300, but the item value is still 600. so, you are essentially doubling your gain by both gettinmg a sword and getting 300 addition to funds rank. Thats why he makes S-rank funds so easy its laughable. Stock up on Silver/Killer/Rever weapons, you get double the gold added to funds.
Flamemonkey
Wow. I didn't think the Silver Card was that broken for ranks. )_)
Bearclaw
Yea, its pretty crazy to let you splurge on the best weapons in teh game and it helps you get S-rank. Its as broken as tehy come. Matthew is essentially a silver card, and since he won't be in teh front lines he can probably go on shopping sprees when your weapon stocks are low.
Janissary
Wait then which Boss is the Silver Card on? *throughly lost now*
Cormag~
The Sage with nuliffied magic. I can't remember his name.
He's protecting a Castle Gate, but after Kishuna appears, he's nothing (He can't use his magic), so Matthew will be able to steal the card without having to be rescued after.
Janissary
It's on Aine(I think that's him)? Wow I totally missed that the several times I have played HHM. Wow. I am an idiot. Thanks.
Swordsalmon
It's Aion. Oh, and Matthew needs to have 15+ Speed to steal it though, as Aion has 14 Speed.
Bearclaw
Matthew only needs to be level 8 to achieve 15 speed, he shouldn't have any issue with stealing from Aion.
Janissary
Seriously. He could do 15 speed blindfolded.
Flamemonkey
If Matthew doesn't have 15 speed, you haven't fielded him. Evah. His speed is huge.

EDIT: Whoops. Didn't see this page. Silly me.
Swordsalmon
No, because he begins at level 2 with 12 or 13 Speed. He can get screwed over.
Bearclaw
...He starts at 11 speed at level 2. With a 70% growth, he can gain speed almost every level. His avg speed hits 15 at level 8 but he can easily get it at level 6.
Hyoushitsu
Matthew has the highest SPD growth in the game. If he doesn't have 15 SPD by then....

It's almost impossible for Matthew to be SPD-screwed.
Vermillion
A Matthew screwed in speed still manages to have better speed than quite a few people. >_>
Hyoushitsu
What's his chance of having less than 15 SPD anyway? I think it's in the single digits by the time he reaches level 11.

In other words, if Matthew reaches level 11, it's almost impossible for him not to have 15 SPD.

So unless you're the most unlucky person ever, or have grossly neglected Matthew, he'll be able to steal the Silver Card.
Vermillion
And even if you ARE the most unlucky person in the world, Zoldam does come with a speedwing, so you can use that on Matthew too. Which...I'd doubt he'd ever, ever have to actually use. *nods*

Hyoushitsu
Ind33d. And that's worst-case scenario. As someone else stated earlier in the thread, Matthew averages 15 SPD at level 7-8. It's almost impossible for even a screwed Matthew not to reach 15 SPD by level 11-12.
